Inter-dining

Updated: May 29, 2020

Initiating a practice of inter-dining

The village Mardapoti has a mixed population of Gonds, Tamrakars, Yadavs, Muslims and Devdas. Caste relations among whom are not cordial. The Gonds maintain practices of untouchability with Tamrakars and Muslims. However the boundaries of caste in the everyday have blurred but all functions (birth, marriage and death) performed according to the rules of Gond community follow strict rules of untouchability i.e. Gonds do not eat food cooked by Tamrakars or Muslims. We arranged our first formal inter-dining on the 8th of April, 2019. We (young women and children from all castes) together cooked litti (part of the local bihari cuisine).

The activity would not have been possible without Vijeta's help.
